Identifying the Ports on Your Device

1. Power port - connect the power cable here.
2. Coaxial connector - connect the coaxial cable here.
3. Ethernet port(s) - connect the Ethernet cable to your router or computer here.
   • Modems have a single Ethernet port to connect to a router.
   • Gateways have four Ethernet ports to connect to computers and other devices.

Setting Up and Connecting Your Device

1. Check your cable modem and its accessories. Take the modem out of the box and locate the accessories and the coaxial port. The coaxial port is a small threaded silver cylindrical connection located on the back. Accessories should include the following:
   • An Ethernet cable for connecting the modem to your computer or router
   • The cable modem’s power adapter
   • A coaxial cable for connecting the modem to the cable line
2. Power up. Once you’ve taken the cable modem out of the box, take the power adapter and plug it to the power port on the modem (located along the area of the coaxial cable). Take the other end of the power adapter, and plug it to a power outlet. Most cable modems are "always on" devices, meaning that there is no on/off switch. As soon as power is connected, the modem will begin booting up. As it boots up, the lights on the cable modem will blink, telling you that it’s trying to connect to Summit Broadband's servers. Once the cable modem establishes a connection, the lights will become steady.
3. Connect the cable to the modem. Take the coaxial cable coming from your wall and connect it to the port at the back of the modem. Tighten it securely by screwing the cable into the port.
4. Plug one end of the Ethernet cable to the back of the cable modem. On a cable modem there’s only one port on the modem where the Ethernet cable can fit, so it’s pretty easy find. Plug the other end of the cable into Ethernet port on the back or side of your desktop or laptop computer.
5. Switch on your computer. Power up your computer. When it boots up, modern operating systems will detect the cable modem the first time it is connected to the computer, and Windows or Mac OSX may install software drivers to more efficiently communicate with the Internet through your specific modem.
