Summary
Follow this article to download and install Plume HomePass on an iOS or Android mobile device, and then use the app to set up the in-home Plume network. If you have an installation appointment, you will need to download the app to your mobile device prior to the technician's arrival.
Reminders
It is critical to remember these points so you will be prepared for your installation appointment.
- Download Plume HomePass from the North American/USA App Store (iOS) or Google Marketplace (Android). In most cases this will not be an issue, but if you live or travel abroad for part of the year and live in Florida for part of the year, you must be sure you are connected to the correct app store.
NOTE: Plume has a European account database and a North American account database. If you install your network through the European database, then Summit Broadband will not be able to provide support for your installed Plume Network. If you do not know if you are connected to the correct network, review your App Store settings before downloading. - The primary device and user that will control the Plume Network in the home must be present for installation. Because Plume HomePass provides you a high level of control and monitoring information, the device that will be used to monitor the network and the owner of that device must be present during installation.
- You must register your Plume account with a valid and unique email address. Plume requires an email address to register your network. If you already have Plume at another home in another location that is not a Summit Broadband property, you will need to register your Plume network with Summit Broadband under a different email address.
Steps
The sections below will help you navigate the self-installation process.
Download the App
Go to the App Store (iOS) or the Google Marketplace (Android) and download the Plume HomePass app.
Set Up the Plume Account
- Open Plume HomePass and tap Setup Plume.
- The app will prompt you to enter your name and your email address.
NOTE: Using the Plume service requires you to have a valid email address and a Plume-enabled router. These are requirements of Plume. - You are reminded to check your email for a verification message from Plume. You must verify your email address before continuing the setup.
Connect the Pods
A Plume network consists of one or more pods that broadcast a Wi-Fi signal. The pods must be connected to power and registered on your Plume and Summit Broadband accounts. The app will walk you through associating the pods with your Plume account.
Plume pods provided by Summit Broadband are already provisioned to work with a Summit Broadband account.
NOTE: Plume HomePass presumes that new customers have a modem and a router. Customers who have an ONT or who will retain a router along with their Plume network will have to access advanced setup options in the app (see below).
- Unplug any devices from your modem and restart it.
- In some cases, the modem should also be left unplugged from power for a minimum of 30 seconds until the next step.
NOTE: If you continue using an existing router, a restart is not necessary.
Connect the First Pod
The first pod on a Plume network is a SuperPod, which has more advanced capabilities and functionality than other Plume Pods. Note that customers with large homes may have more than one SuperPod as well as several PowerPods installed. In any case, the first SuperPod installed will be designated as the Gateway Pod, and it will regulate the function (directly or indirectly) of all the other pods on your account.
- Plug a SuperPod into the modem using the included Ethernet cable.
- Tap View Options followed by Advanced Setup Options to access additional configurations based on how your previous network was set up (e.g., routers, modem/router combos, switches, etc.).
- Plug the Gateway pod into the power outlet.
- The LED will turn solid for a moment and will begin to slowly pulse.
NOTE: If the modem was left unplugged from the previous step, at this point it should be plugged back into power. - Stay close to the pod so the app can find it via Bluetooth.
- The LED will continue to slowly pulse until the pod connects to the cloud.
Set Up the New Wi-Fi Network
- Once connected, the app prompts you to input your new Wi-Fi name (SSID) and Password.
- To simplify setup, you can use your pre-existing SSID and password. This will allow all devices to easily switch to the new Wi-Fi network once the old one has been turned off, without needing to update credentials on every single Wi-Fi client.
- Alternatively, you may choose to set up a completely new Wi-Fi network name and/or password. This will help ensure that the new Wi-Fi network starts off as secure as possible.
- Once the Gateway pod connected to the cloud, the LED should now turn off.
- At the bottom of the screen, the progress on the new network configuration will be displayed.
Pod Placement Tips
- The app will show a series of tips on how best to position the remaining pods.
- Tips include how to avoid blocking the signal with furniture and other objects as well how to avoid blocking the second outlet.
Adding More Pods
- If the first pod is a part of a Starter Pack, it will start looking for the other associated pods now. A greyed out image of the Pods known to be part of the pack will appear.
- You should go around the house plugging in the rest of the pods.
- As each pod connects to the network and cloud, a green check mark will appear and the LED will turn off.
- If the pods are not part of a pack, the app will try to find them via Bluetooth. However, the pods will be found by the network as long as they are within range of a pod associated with the network.
- Once all Pods are connected, tap Done adding Pods.
Final Setup
Once the pods are installed and connected, a few final steps will make sure you can easily monitor and use your network through the app.
Enable Notifications
Choosing to Enable Notifications will send a push alert to your phone in case of events on home network or security alerts triggered by Guard.
Join Your Wi-Fi
- Plume HomePass will prompt you to join the new Wi-Fi network.
- Tapping on Join will take you out of Plume HomePass and into the Wi-Fi - settings so you can join.
- Once back in the Plume HomePass, a Welcome Aboard message indicates that the device is now connected and the new Wi-Fi network is operational.
Name the Pods
While this is an optional step, pods can be named for easier identification later. You are encouraged to provide names to the pods to help you and Summit Broadband agents identify the location of each pod for troubleshooting.
- To name the pods, bring the device close to each pod that is to be named.
- Bluetooth will identify the closest pod.
- Choose from the list of default names or enter a custom name for each pod.
- Tap Snooze to skip this step (not recommended).
First Optimization
- The first optimization is the last part of the initial setup.
- The app will describe what you can expect from these optimizations over the next few weeks.
- As the cloud receives more information about the environment from the pods, optimizations will continually be fine tuned and the performance will continue improve.
- Additional optimizations will be triggered every night around 2AM and then as needed based on environmental factors.
